Fact Sheet: West Nile Virus

The worst ever mosquito season is here, and mosquito-borne diseases are resurfacing. The Center for Disease Control documented over 34,000 cases of equine West Nile virus in the United States since 2001, with a 25% mortality rate. Eastern Equine Encephalitis is not as prevalent as West Nile virus, but it is predicted to spread to other states this year and the fatality rate is 90%.
West Nile Virus has begun its 6th season in the U.S. and health officials predict a worse outbreak than last year. According to the Centers for Disease Control, over 9,100 cases of the West Nile virus were reported nationwide last year and 246 people died. Not only are Mosquito bites dangerous to humans, Mosquito-borne diseases also kill thousands of birds, horses and zoo wildlife each year.
The Center for Disease Control admits that mosquito control measures such as community spraying and draining of mosquito-breeding ponds is not enough to control the spread of the disease. Candles and foggers alone are also not sufficient safeguards. Repellents containing DEET can be dangerous because research shows that DEET does not always fend off all mosquito species and it is a synthetic chemical that can cause neurological damage in humans, particularly in children.       Every year, approximately one-third of the U.S. population uses insect repellents containing DEET to ward off mosquitoes and other pests. At present, DEET is used in more than 230 products with concentrations up to 100 percent. The American Association of Pediatrics issued a warning that DEET solutions over 10 percent concentration should not be used on any children, and that infants and pregnant women should not use DEET products at all. Up to 56 percent of topically applied DEET penetrates the skin, and 17 percent is absorbed into the bloodstream. Reactions include headache, disorientation, agitation, seizure, anaphylaxis, and coma. With heavy exposure to DEET, humans may experience memory loss, weakness, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, tremors and shortness of breath. These symptoms may not be evident until months or even years after exposure.
